WHAT'S HOT

New for Fall – Winter
  • New inspiration for styles
  • New color emphasis
  • New accessories
Trends
  • Luxury is the mainstay of the feminine trend which is abundant in tactile surfaces. You will want to touch the fabrics – soft knits, silk charmeuse, velvet, fur accents.
  • Romance is everywhere: ruffles, bows, drape detailing on skirts, dresses & tops. Ruffles (Note: wear these in small doses; pair them with clean shapes.) Florals.
  • Simple, sleek shapes. These are simple, easy to wear, soft , loose, and often layered. Examples: long sweater coats, knit dresses. Some are “tech-inspired”. Streamlined styles can be belted, worn with a long muffler & opaque hosiery. These styles are right in shades of grey, taupe, and black.
  • American Classics with a modern twist. For example – a pinstripe pant or plaid skirt with a modern top or jacket. Classics should not look dated.
Colors

  • Colors will be somewhat somber & subdued with black and “glorious gray”.
  • For color, a broad range of “Berry” tones take center stage ----anything from purple, plum, fuschia, and shades of red. It all depends on the designer.
  • Blue is also Big! Hues range from slate blue to electric. Royal is in many collections.
  • Touches of vibrant tones will be used in one item of clothing – like a blouse or jacket. Or color appears in an accessory like a red purse or shoe.
  • Golds and greens add variety to the season.
Styles

Jackets/Coats:

  • Collars are new. Larger, with more design detail – highlighting the face.
  • Sleeves can be shorter on jackets and coats. Long sleeves too, of course.
  • Details on sleeves.
  • Fabrics are often textured: interesting (lush, flecked, tweeded, nubby.)
  • The “trench” style works in a coat or dress, when combined with updated fabrics.
  • Vests are a fashion category. (knits, fur.)
  • Jackets are more relaxed this season.
  • Patent trims appear on jackets & coats. Patent is now year-round. (Shoes and handbags too.)

"THE DRESS"

  • Continues as a strong category!
  • Sleeveless or short sleeves can be topped with a cardigan or a jacket.
  • A L.B.D. (little black dress) or a basic grey is a wardrobe builder.
  • Legwear should always be considered with the dress.
  • Art prints and florals are great in a dress or a blouse.

Tops/Sweaters:

  • Knitwear rules: cardigans (long & loose or shrunken), draped necks, turtlenecks, vests.
  • Embellished necklines on tops with stones, sequins, studs, or crystals.
  • Wear loose or belted.

Blouses

  • Romantic influences are the key: ruffles, tie necks, bows.
  • “The soft bow blouse is one of fall’s biggest trends.” They work under cardigans, jackets & vests.
  • Satin, silk charmeuse, and lace.
  • Remember a white shirt works. Try one with a new neckline or some ruching. Makes a good layering piece.

Pants

  • Range from full and slouchy to slim. Most are easy fitting relaxed trousers.
  • Pants that are full length are worn long.
  • Shorter pants with a great bootie or shoe.
  • Skinny pants should be worn by the “right gal” with the “right style top”. Caution. Wear what looks good on you.
  • Menswear works well in pants.
  • Cords can elongate the leg. (vertical stripe)
  • A good black, grey, or brown trouser is a wardrobe basic.

Skirts

  • Lengths vary from mini to calf-grazing. Age & legs make the decision. Longer is coming back.
  • Shapes: pencil, belled, flared & pleated. The pencil works well with the romantic tops.
  • Some higher waist styles look great.

Accessories

  • Express your personal style & individuality through accessories.
  • Do not “match” accessories. Mix colors and textures.

Necklaces

  • The bold “STATEMENT NECKLACE” gets top billing in this category. Long and bold can be worn over clothing. Shorter bold pieces for open necklines.(Everything from link metal chains, to plastics, and pearls)
  • Earrings are whatever looks good with everything else.

Scarves

  • Also giving the neckline attention is the long scarf or muffler tied or wrapped giving a Bohemian or European flair. It is fun and a big trend for winter.

Belts

  • All widths from skinny to hefty. Narrow in newest.

Bracelets

  • Stacked cuffs in any and all metals, stones, resins.

Hosiery

  • With the return of the skirt and dress, so returns hosiery.
  • Opaques, textures, ribs, patterns, and even sheer black.
  • Going bare is the winter is unnecessary.

Handbags

  • Big bags are big business. Clutches too.
  • Lush embossed leathers, exotic reptiles, croco, patent tactile finishes.
  • Pleats, belts, framing are all new handbag details.
  • Rule: “The simpler the clothing, the more adventuresome the bag can get and vice versa.
  • Color in handbags & footwear is fun.

Sunglasses

  • Oversized plastic frames are glamourous ( a 50’s feel)

Gloves

  • Used to accessorize. Newest direction is in the longer lengths.

Footwear

  • High-vamp shoes (more shoe on top of the foot) make news.
  • “The Boot” was a runway favorite – leathers and suede. Wear with hot legwear.
  • Ankle boots getting much attention.
  • Flats are in the mix.
  • There are just too many styles, colors & textures to talk about.

TIP: You do not need to “match” accessories. It is more modern to mix textures & colors.

Note: Every “New” look cannot be addressed here, but these are the ones that I have seen impacting us this season.
